I Investigated Fake Solar Companies in Hawaii — The Scams Costing Homeowners $50K

Aloha — today, I’m pulling back the curtain on a wave of “fake solar” sales tactics quietly draining tens of thousands of dollars from local Hawaii homeowners — and clouding the titles of the very homes families plan to sell, pass down, or refinance.

Hawaii pays the most expensive electricity in the United States, which makes our residents the #1 target for door-to-door reps in neon vests pitching the same script: “The government wants to pay for your solar — no cost to you.” That promise sounds wonderful. The reality, after I investigated the contracts, is very different.
What you’ll learn in this video:

  • How the Hawaii Green Infrastructure name and other state-program references are being misused as sales hooks
  • Why a “solar lease” is not the same as owning your panels — and what that means at closing
  • The hidden UCC‑1 filing that quietly attaches to your home and can derail a sale
  • Why some homeowners are quoted $30,000+ just to terminate the agreement before they can list
  • Red flags every Hawaii homeowner should recognize before signing anything at the front door

If you live anywhere from Oʻahu and Maui to the Big Island, Kauaʻi, Molokaʻi, or Lānaʻi — or you’re an overseas owner of a Hawaii property managed from afar — this is required watching before you (or your tenant) say “yes” to anyone on the porch.

Why I made this:
Real estate isn’t just about buying and selling. It’s about protecting equity, title, and the long-term financial picture of the families I serve. For many years, I’ve helped local kamaʻāina, mainland transplants, and international clients from Asia, Canada, and beyond navigate Hawaii’s market with clarity. Spotting these traps before they cost you a sale is part of that job.
