Living in Hawaii is a dream, but the cost of paradise usually comes with a high utility bill. What if you could flip the script and have the electric company pay you instead?
Welcome to the new era of Hawaii real estate, where your home doesn’t just shelter you—it pays you. With over two decades of experience advising clients in luxury and commercial markets, I constantly look for leverage that maximizes a property’s value. Today, we are breaking down Hawaiian Electric’s (HECO) highly anticipated Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Plus program, which officially replaced the old Battery Bonus system.
If you own a home with a paid-off solar and battery system—or if you are an investor looking to acquire energy-optimized Hawaii real estate—you are looking at an income-producing asset. By simply enrolling your battery in the BYOD Plus program and allowing HECO to utilize it during peak evening hours (6:00 PM – 8:00 PM), you unlock massive upfront cash incentives and recurring monthly bill credits.
Here is the math: HECO pays you $400 upfront for every kilowatt of battery power you commit. For a standard 5kW commitment, that’s a $2,000 check straight to your pocket. If you qualify for the Low-to-Moderate Income (LMI) tier, that incentive doubles to $800 per kW. On top of the upfront cash, you earn monthly credits at the full retail rate for the energy you send back to the grid when demand is highest.
At Island Dragonfly, my global business partners and I don’t just sell houses; we sell high-performing assets. Whether you’re a local resident trying to slash your monthly overhead or an international investor seeking maximum equity on a Hawaiian estate, understanding these utility incentives is a game-changer.
